Press release

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal pays tribute to Louise Harel

Montreal, January 30, 2002 - On the occasion of the reshuffling of the Landry cabinet, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal wishes to pay tribute to Louise Harel for her important contribution, as minister of municipal affairs and Greater Montreal, to the recent municipal restructuring. In early 2000, Ms. Harel initiated an important debate on municipal reorganization in Quebec and, in particular, the future of Greater Montreal. “Thanks to her vision, her tenacity, and her courage, on January 1 we saw the creation of a new City of Montreal– a strong, unified city that can play a leading role on the national and international stage,” declared Guy Fréchette, president of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

The creation of the new city results in stronger leadership for the entire metropolitan region, and, as representative of the Greater Montreal business community, the Board of Trade will play the role of agent for responsible, contributory change. The Board of Trade also intends to translate its commitment to the development of Montreal into concrete accomplishments and contributions.

The Board of Trade would also like to congratulate André Boisclair, the new minister for municipal affairs and Greater Montreal, to whom the premier has specifically entrusted the important task of following up on the infrastructure program. “As we have done many times over the past few years, the Board of Trade pledges its full support to the new minister, in order to promote the harmonious and efficient economic development of the metropolis for the benefit of all citizens and companies in Greater Montreal,” concluded Fréchette.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has more than 7 000 members. Its mission is to be the leading group representing the interests of the Greater Montreal business community. The objectives are to maintain, at all times, relevance to its membership, credibility towards the media and influence towards government and decision-makers.
