Montréal, February 10, 2016 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is pleased that the Ville de Montréal has formed a working group on non-residential municipal taxes and economic development chaired by Anne-Marie Hubert, Managing Partner for Quebec for the firm EY and Board of Trade board member. “This initiative echoes calls by the Board of Trade to do more to support the city’s economic development and business environment,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.
“We are very satisfied to see that the Ville de Montréal recognizes the heavy burden of non-residential taxes and their impact on the city’s business environment,” Michel Leblanc said. “Between all three levels of government, Montrealers are among the most highly taxed people in North America. This has a negative effect on entrepreneurship and business growth, in addition to reducing the city’s attractiveness when trying to convince companies and strategic talent to settle in Montréal. We are convinced that the exercise that gets underway today will improve the competitiveness of the business environment, particularly for merchants. The working group should also confirm the need for a law on metropolitan status that would give Montréal sources of revenue other than property tax for fulfilling its responsibilities.”
