The Chamber will mark the 100th anniversary of the National Hockey League

Montréal, November 7, 2017 – The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is pleased to play host to the National Hockey League (NHL) and its Commissioner, Gary Bettman, as part of the festivities for the 100th anniversary of the NHL, which was founded in Montréal in 1917. Mr. Bettman will be accompanied by the President of the CH Group, Geoff Molson, along with the general managers of the NHL teams. The event, organized as part of the Bell International Leaders series, in partnership with evenko, is taking place November 17 at the Hotel Bonaventure. It will be a chance to get an economic perspective on the business acumen involved in professional sports at top levels and understand the direction the NHL will take in the years to come.

“Hockey plays an important role in the city’s soul and economy,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “It is only natural to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the NHL and to highlight its role as an economic driver. Commissioner since 1993, Mr. Bettman helped strengthen the league in its traditional markets. He has grown the NHL, maximized its profitability and positioned hockey in new markets. Connections he helped form with different business communities on the continent are great models for local businesses to follow.”

“We are also pleased to welcome Geoff Molson for this event,” Mr. Leblanc said. “The Montréal Canadiens are an economic driver for many businesses. The company’s brand is recognized around the world. It is part of what makes the city’s reputation. The company’s history, both on and off the ice, is a source of inspiration for the business community.”

“It is an honour for Bell to partner once again with the Chamber for a Bell International Leaders series event,” said Gerry Frappier, President, French-language TV and RDS, Bell Media. “This series offers the Montréal business community models of vision and ambition that encourage us to keep reaching higher. With a very active team in Montréal in sports broadcasting and a deep commitment to professional hockey, Bell knows just how important ties between business and sport are.”

The Club de hockey Canadien is proud to partner with the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal to present a conference featuring Commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHL,” said Geoff Molson, Owner, President and Chief Executive Officer, Club de hockey Canadien, Bell Centre and evenko. “Relationships between teams and the economies of NHL cities are sources of business opportunities, and, in the case of Montréal, these go back over 100 years. Discussions about the league’s business development will definitely be exciting.”

Over the years, the Chamber has welcomed many distinguished speakers as part of its Bell International Leaders series, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Prime Minister Manuel Valls, President Bill Clinton, former President of General Electric Jack Welch, Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. On October 20, the President and CEO of Bombardier, Alain Bellemare, and the CEO of Airbus, Thomas Enders, joined us as part of this series.

This Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal event is organized with the support of Bell, in partnership with evenko and in cooperation with CJAD and the Montreal Gazette.

Directions for registering for this event are available on the Chamber website.
