            Why Japan?
Japan is the third leading economic power in the world. The country offers an excellent business climate and favourable environment. This is almong others because of its first-rate infrastructure, low corruption and highly skilled, specialized labour.
International trade is essential to its prosperity. In 2016, Japan was the fourth leading importer and exporter of goods. According to the World Bank, international trade represented approximately 36% of its GDP in 2015.
In 2016, Japan was Québec’s second most important Asian trading partner (after China), with merchandise exports of $1.3 billion. Japan ranks seventh among Québec’s international trading partners.
Canada and Japan are part of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), signed on March 8, 2018. The CPTPP involves 11 countries: Canada, Japan, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Together, these 11 countries represent 500 million people and a combined GDP of $13.5 billion.
Once in force, the CPTPP will be one of the largest economic agreements in the world. This agreement will improve access to the Japanese market and to the Asia-Pacific region.
The trade mission led by the Mayor of Montréal will be the first mission organized in the framework of this agreement.
