How many times have you seriously considered expanding into international markets… only to put the project on hold due to a lack of clarity, resources, or simply time?
What if the real barrier to going global wasn’t the market itself, but the lack of time to properly structure your approach?
Exporting isn’t just about having a good opportunity or entering a high-potential market. What truly makes the difference is a company’s ability to make informed decisions, secure its choices, and move forward at the right pace ‒ without costly trial and error or unnecessarily stretching its resources.
This is exactly where export consulting services come into play: not as occasional support, but as a true outsourced export function, adaptable to each company’s challenges, resources, and level of maturity. But what does that actually look like in practice?
When exporting becomes a matter of structure, not intuition
Let’s take the example of a Quebec-based SME in the agri-food manufacturing sector. The company identified a real opportunity to expand into Europe. Aware that exporting cannot rely on intuition alone, the leadership team structured their approach through the Trade Accelerator Program (TAP) to develop a clear and coherent export plan.
Once the plan was completed, the next step was to activate the strategy, seize the opportunity, and unlock the market’s potential. However, several operational questions remained:
- At what price should the product be sold internationally? Is it competitive? Does it ensure sufficient margins to make exporting worthwhile?
- How should export logistics be structured to avoid impacting margins while managing legal and tax risks?
- What tax implications need to be anticipated before signing the first distribution agreement?
- How can operations be set up for success while minimizing risks from the very start of the partnership?
Rather than moving forward blindly or multiplying mandates with specialized consultants, the company chose to rely on the CCMM’s export consulting expertise, entrusting the management of its export function to a dedicated resource.
The role of export consulting: acting as your company’s export resource
In practice, our role was to act as an outsourced export resource, temporarily integrated into the management team to develop a holistic view of the export process.
We began by modeling different export scenarios, taking into account the company’s specific constraints and risks, while always considering customer expectations and the relationship dynamics. This approach allowed us to determine export pricing based on the chosen market entry strategy, the number of intermediaries involved, and the applicable Incoterms.
These calculations and scenario modeling helped move beyond theory and enabled data-driven decision-making to structure the export process effectively. For each scenario analyzed, risks were identified and paired with appropriate mitigation measures..
We then supported the company in its strategic decisions, helping select the most profitable option, while also ensuring it was operationally realistic and low-risk, without compromising the value delivered to the customer. Exporting should aim for long-term sustainability, fostering customer loyalty and recurring business.
Secure before you scale
Once the strategy was defined, the work didn’t stop there. Export consulting also played a key role in addressing critical aspects of the project, including negotiating the commercial agreement with the foreign partner, selecting specialized logistics and legal providers, and managing tax risks to avoid unexpected issues after the first sales.
Result: a secure market entry from the outset - without delays or guesswork - and with a clear understanding of profitability and associated risks.
Save time… and avoid costly mistakes
Outsourcing your export function doesn’t mean giving up control over your decisions. It means empowering yourself to decide faster ‒ and more importantly better ‒ by relying on the right information at the right time.
Export consulting acts as:
- An accelerator for structuring your international development
- A strategic filter before taking action
- A lever to reduce risks related to logistics, taxation, and market positioning
In concrete terms, it turns a complex process into a clear and controlled roadmap.
This allows you to stay focused on your core business while expanding internationally in a structured, secure… and high-performing way.
