Digital strategy: a needed transformation for the competitiveness of the city’s businesses

Montréal, May 20, 2016 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes today’s announcement by the Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation and the Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy, Dominique Anglade, regarding Québec’s Plan d’action en économie numérique (digital economy action plan) and Stratégie numérique (digital strategy).

“Today’s announcement sends a strong message about how urgent it is for the private sector to speed up the transition to digital and the importance of adapting business models to new market realities, starting today,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “Local businesses are lagging in the digital economy, despite the fact that the city is bursting with strategic talent and assets for this sector. With this new strategy, businesses will have the leverage they need to transform and position themselves favourably in the digital world internationally.”

“This announcement shows the government’s will to act quickly through concrete, short-term action, along with the need to have a more global vision of a rapidly changing sector,” Michel Leblanc said. “However, to tackle this challenge, the government needs to be consistent and show openness to new business models. It should also ensure that financial commitments are met fluidly and quickly to speed up the transition of companies to digital technology. In the longer term, the strategy should ensure better alignment of all government efforts to support economic development.”

“The Board of Trade intends to take part in consultations and invite representatives of the business community to be part of this transformation, which is essential for their competitiveness,” Michel Leblanc said.
