The city’s business community is delighted with the signature of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in Atlanta

Montréal, October 5, 2015 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the agreement entered into by the Government of Canada during negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) today in Atlanta. This agreement is excellent news for the city’s businesses and will increase their international competitiveness.

“This partnership is historic and major,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “It creates the largest free trade zone in the world among 12 countries that together account for 40% of the world economy. This agreement will give Canadian businesses easier access to markets with close to 800 million consumers, with growth in certain countries reaching close to 6% per year. The fact that Canada is one of the founding TTP countries will help businesses in the city and the rest of Canada position themselves on new Asian and world value chains. This is powerful leverage for economic growth and job creation that we absolutely must tap into.”

“Currently, 26.5% of Quebec’s GDP is derived from international exports,” Michel Leblanc said. “With the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union, the Canada-South Korea Free Trade Agreement and this agreement, Canadian businesses will benefit from the liberalization of these markets. The Board of Trade and its team of international trade experts, the World Trade Centre Montréal, will continue in their efforts to guide the city’s companies on these promising markets, through the seminars, training and trade missions they have been organizing for the past 30 years. While the details of the agreement need to be studied, signing this agreement is great news for the city’s businesses.”
