Press release

China Mission 2010:
Quebec business generators set off to conquer the Chinese market

Montréal, May 6, 2010The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal and its team of international trade experts, the World Trade Centre Montréal, in partnership with the Direction du développement économique et urbain of the City of Montréal, are proud to launch the economic mission led by Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay. This mission, made up of more than 30 businesses and institutions, will visit Hong Kong and Shanghai from May 8 to 14.

“As the world economic crisis nears an end, China’s gross domestic product will grow 10% beginning this year, according to IMF forecasts,” said the President and CEO of the Board of Trade, Michel Leblanc. “This sort of buoyant economic activity is a sign of new business opportunities for Montréal companies, because the Chinese are increasing their imports for production and consumption: the volume of imports in China has seen annual growth of 25% since 2000. It’s in the interest of our businesses to develop their trade relations with China. This mission will provide participating companies the chance to get to know potential customers and partners. The presence of the Mayor of Montréal is an invaluable asset for opening doors for and attracting attention to small businesses that want to penetrate this huge market.”

“This mission is a unique opportunity to showcase the assets of Montréal and its businesses to the Chinese business community to position ourselves in this important market and create lasting business ties,” said Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay. “Our ability to create and innovate needs to receive more recognition, and this is the incredible asset that we want to show the Chinese.”

Participating companies—large and small businesses that operate mainly in the medical, information technology and environmental sectors—will enjoy individual meetings with potential buyers and take part in networking activities with the local business community, in addition to benefiting from the expertise of international trade advisors. The participants will also have the privilege of attending the official inauguration of Espace Montréal for Expo 2010, which the Mayor of Montréal will participate in.

This economic mission is organized in partnership with the Ville de Montréal and is made possible by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.

Through its team of experts at the World Trade Centre Montréal, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal provides international trade services to the greater business community, with the support of Canada Economic Development.
