The Chamber applauds the announcement of the Government of Canada’s historic investments in public transit and stresses that they must lead to the completion of forward-looking projects for the city

Montréal, February 10, 2021 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes today’s announcement by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, of a $14.9 billion investment in public transit projects for the next eight years. In the wake of this announcement, the government must act quickly to confirm that it is earmarking amounts to carry out structuring projects for the city, such as the REM station at Montréal-Trudeau Airport and the VIA Rail high-frequency train project.

“There is a great need for public investments that will both accelerate the economic relaunch and improve our environmental performance,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “The announcement of almost $15 billion to develop public transit projects across Canada in the next few years is timely. The Government of Canada is sending a clear signal about the importance of public transit, which faces the major challenge of restoring user confidence and its place at the centre of their travel.”

“Action needs to be taken now so that public investments have a lasting impact on our economy and act as a lever for private investment,” Michel Leblanc said. “A number of projects in Greater Montréal could have this effect if they are confirmed soon. This is the case for the REM station at Montréal-Trudeau Airport, a project for which the Government of Canada has shown leadership in recent months, as well as VIA Rail’s Québec-Windsor high-frequency train. We expect today’s announcement to herald the imminent kick-off of these structuring projects for the city.”
