Closer collaboration with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service will help internationalize the city’s SMEs

Montréal, May 14, 2014 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is delighted with today’s announcement by Canada’s Minister for International Trade, Ed Fast, that the Trade Commissioner Service network will be put increasingly at the service of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for their international market development efforts. Mr. Fast announced that trade commissioners will be integrated to organizations that are active in export development. We are particularly pleased with the Minister’s decision to assign a trade commissioner to the Board of Trade’s offices.

“This initiative is part of the Board of Trade’s efforts to better meet business needs,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “Having a trade commissioner in our offices will help us consolidate ties with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service here and abroad. We will be better able to share experiences and business practices and, ultimately, our SMEs will be better equipped for diversifying their export markets.”

“This new resource will reinforce our team of international trade experts, the World Trade Centre Montréal, and will strengthen ties with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service,” Michel Leblanc said. “Already this year, we jointly organized a seminar on business opportunities in Texas, hosted delegations from Haiti, Tunisia and Western Africa and organized a trade mission to the multilateral development banks. As a complement to the government’s Global Markets Action Plan, which was launched last November, having a trade commissioner here will help provide richer, better targeted programming for export activities.”
