The Ville de Montréal’s Transportation Electrification Strategy: a great initiative to strengthen the leadership of the city’s businesses in an industry of the future

Montréal, June 20, 2016 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes the Ville de Montréal’s announcement of its 2016-2020 Transportation Electrification Strategy. It includes the creation of an institute for electrification and smart transportation, the Institut de l’électrification et des transports intelligents de Montréal, which will ensure businesses have the conditions they need to experiment with and commercialize new technologies.

“The Board of Trade congratulates Mayor Denis Coderre and his team for putting companies at the centre of this important strategy based on a global vision of the potential of electrification in the city,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “By trying to make Montréal a technological showcase, this plan offers innovative SMEs incredible visibility, not only in the city, but also internationally. It is additional leverage that will help companies seize the many business opportunities that emerge from the energy transition.”

“The creation of the Institut de l’électrification et des transports intelligents is excellent news,” Michel Leblanc said. “This initiative will allow companies to test new technologies and foster their commercialization. The institute will help strengthen the international leadership of Montréal businesses in electrical innovations. It will also be an important factor in attracting more investment to Montréal in a number of related fields, particularly in transportation.”

“The Board of Trade also applauds the Ville de Montréal’s intention to work actively on the metropolitan electrical network – the Réseau électrique métropolitain – a flagship project in the electrification of public transit in the city, and its desire to provide access to the latest technological advances, particularly when it comes to smart vehicles,” Mr. Leblanc said. “With Montréal just being named smart community of the year by the Intelligent Community Forum, the Transportation Electrification Strategy will allow the city to keep making its mark internationally.”
