An introduction from the speaker
We Montrealers once dared to dream. We invested billions in our dreams, with audacious projects like the Metro, Expo 67, and countless others that rang the world’s bells.
The largest building in the Commonwealth, the world’s tallest reinforced concrete building, a Lego-like apartment complex called Habitat 67, a geodesic dome by the father of futurism. Montréal was Buckminster Fuller, Mies van der Rohe, I.M. Pei, Moshe Safdie; it was monumental sculptures by Calder and Moore.
From these we reaped tens of billions in return and staked our place as a pre-eminent city and destination of choice. The new Champlain Bridge provides us with an opportunity to dream again. "Yes, we can" create a marvel of the 21st century, to our enormous economic benefit. It is our defining moment.
