WHY LYON?

Lyon is one of the most dynamic business destinations in Europe. Resolutely turned toward entrepreneurship and growth, it offers an attractive business environment. Around 15,000 new businesses are created every year in Greater Lyon.

The city’s influence is demonstrated in the fact that it is home to around 150 global leaders. A number of these leaders have their international or European head offices in Lyon, such as IBM, Electronic Arts, Toshiba, Sanofi Pasteur, GE Healthcare, Bayer CropScience, Bosch and Philips.

Research and development and high-tech sectors have a major presence in Greater Lyon. Regional investments totalled 5.5 billion euros in 2011, which equals 12% of the total investment for France. It is interesting to note that the Cellule Grand Lyon Expérimentation even makes available its urban networks, public spaces, buildings and infrastructures to test new products and services.

The trade mission to Lyon targets three very important sectors for this market:

Digital technology: Digital media is a large and growing market in Lyon. The sector is well represented with 7,000 businesses, 42,000 jobs and 3.5 billion euros in sales, and the city is brimming with opportunities to establish partnerships, acquire know-how and develop a customer base.

Life sciences: With 600 companies, 100,000 jobs, 150 research labs and one of the highest concentrations of hospitals and universities in Europe, Lyon is one of the ten largest biotechnology and health markets on the continent.

Clean tech: Lyon has a dynamic ecosystem in the clean tech sector and particularly in energy and green buildings. The leading French region for the production of energy and electricity, the Rhône-Alpes region has 25% of companies and jobs in France in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency. It is also the leading French centre for lighting, with 5,000 companies.

Transportation: With leaders like Renault Trucks and Alstom Transport, Lyon is at the heart of the transportation and mobility sector in the Rhône-Alpes region. A network of over 700 companies, 80,000 jobs, a turnover of over 13 billion Euros, and 80 laboratories, technical centres, and professional training organizations make it the Number 1 region in France for the automotive sector, and a European reference for collaborative research projects.

Some stats:

  • The French city with the most favourable business climate (L’Expansion-L’Express)
  • Second leading industrial region in France
  • Third leading European region for foreign investment (after London and Paris) according to Ernst & Young
  • Second leading city in France for patent applications
  • Fifth leading city in Europe for R&D spending
  • Tenth leading city in Europe for the number of European patent applications
