Montréal, August 25, 2016 – Today the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal presented its recommendations to the Minister of Culture and Communications, Luc Fortin, as part of public consultations held by the Government of Québec to renew its Cultural Policy. The Board of Trade is well aware that culture extends far beyond the lens of business and economic performance. It considers culture to be one of the underpinnings of a society. Its recommendations are meant to ensure the cultural sector’s development and sustainability.
Better support the creative heart of culture
“Studies published by the Board of Trade since 2005 reveal an alarming vulnerability in the creative heart of Montréal, specifically among artists, authors and performers,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “This weakens not only an entire industry that is fuelled by their work, but also the city’s vitality and creativity. The Government of Québec’s next Cultural Policy needs to propose measures to stimulate the development of the cultural sector to increase and better distribute revenue.”
Six ideas to stimulate the development of the cultural sector
The Board of Trade has six ideas for revitalizing the development of the cultural sector.
- Stimulate cultural demand among Quebecers.
- Export more culture beyond our borders.
- Diversify and democratize sources of financing for culture.
- Expand the scope of the Mécénat Placements Culture program without altering it.
- Promote the creation of critical mass within cultural organizations.
- Maintain a strong cultural sector at the epicentre of Greater Montréal.
Continue the metropolitan cultural issues table
“The Board of Trade is proud of having contributed to the achievements of the steering committee Montréal, cultural metropolis, the mandate of which ends in 2017,” Mr. Leblanc said. “We believe this sort of discussion forum is useful for getting major public decision makers around the table along with representatives of the cultural milieu and the private sector. Greater consistency between players’ efforts gives our activities more impact and contributes to the city’s influence.”
