Montréal, October 7, 2013 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes with interest the economic policy presented today by the Minister of Finance and the Economy, Nicolas Marceau. “The Quebec economy has been showing alarming signs of losing steam in recent months,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “The plan presented today proposes the short-term shot in the arm our economy needs. But the real test will be promoting a business environment that reassures companies and restores the city’s role as economic driver.”
“The government has set ambitious objectives, which we support,” Michel Leblanc said. “The challenge remains creating a business environment that prompts companies to invest of their own accord without government incentives. This is essential to promoting sustained growth in the longer term.”
“Finally, we are troubled to see that the policy does not propose concrete efforts to restore the city to its role as the economic driver of Quebec,” Michel Leblanc said. “The city’s economy has deteriorated since last year. We cannot rely on one economic development plan for the entire province to change our course. So we expect that the policies that will be announced shortly will place more importance on the economic development of Greater Montréal.”
