Montréal, June 11, 2013 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal supports the proposals of the Task Force on Cultural Philanthropy chaired by Pierre Bourgie. Given a mandate by the government in January 2013 to identify the reasons that Québec lags in cultural philanthropy, the Task Force has outlined five proposals and some 20 associated initiatives to increase private sector support for culture, both from individuals and corporations.
“We share a deep conviction: culture expresses our society’s identity and contributes directly to our city’s visibility and economic development,” says Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.
“We support the objective of increasing personal and business donations to culture by 50% in four years, bringing them from $45 million to $68 million,” Michel Leblanc says. “This objective is feasible, and the measures proposed to achieve it are appropriate and realistic. We are particularly pleased that the Task Force has recommended pursuing and improving the Mécénat Placements Culture program, a measure the Board of Trade already promotes. And we are confident that the proposal to “inject culture in the heart of the city” will stimulate public art, art integrated to real estate and the presence of artists.”
For a number of years, the Board of Trade has presented a series of initiatives intended to strengthen ties between the business community and the cultural sector, including the Prix Arts-Affaires de Montréal, organized in partnership with the Conseil des arts de Montréal. In fact, the chair of the Task Force, Pierre Bourgie, is presenting the results of its efforts this evening at the awards ceremony.
