The Board of Trade reiterates its support for the Enbridge line 9B reversal project

Montréal, September 10, 2013 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal reiterated its support for the line 9B reversal project during a Board of Trade event featuring Al Monaco, Enbridge’s President and CEO, as guest speaker. At the same time, the Board of Trade again pointed to the project’s major benefits for consolidating the city’s petrochemical industry and for a safe oil supply for Quebec.

“Our energy strategy needs to include the safe supply of Canadian oil, along with the development of green technologies and renewable energy,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “This is why the proposed flow reversal of an existing, functional pipeline is yet one more asset for Greater Montréal.”

“A stable, more affordable supply of oil will consolidate some 3,600 jobs and 48 companies in Eastern Montréal,” Mr. Leblanc said. “The pipeline reversal could also spark a revival of this sector of our economy, which has struggled a great deal with the closing of the Shell and Pétromont refineries and the loss of 800 direct jobs. Our economy would suffer if we are deprived of these jobs and this expertise.”

“Public authorities should also ensure that oil industry players respect the highest standards in terms of monitoring and controlling their facilities and equipment,” Mr. Leblanc said. “The Board of Trade has noted Enbridge’s commitment to instituting exemplary maintenance measures for the pipeline and a strict emergency measures management process.”
