The city’s business community fully supports the rapid ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

Montréal, June 18, 2018 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is lending its support to the Government of Canada’s decision to accelerate the ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The introduction of the bill in the House of Commons is the right strategy.

“The Chamber salutes the proactivity of the Government of Canada, particularly of Minister François-Philippe Champagne, to obtain an immediate ratification of the CPTPP. In the context of NAFTA renegotiations and the uncertainty surrounding Canada-US trade, it is very important to accelerate free access to the markets of Pacific Asia. We support the Canadian government’s desire to do all it can to ratify the agreement and encourage the other signatory countries to do the same. We invite all the federal political parties to form a common front on this crucial issue for our companies and our economy,” declared Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal.

“The CPTPP is a strategic asset when it comes to diversifying markets for our exporters. Our companies are positioned to stand out in this booming area. The Ville de Montréal and the Chamber have just concluded an economic mission to Japan, which is one of the high-potential markets of the CPTPP. This mission allowed us to see Japan’s strong interest in our innovations and the expertise of our companies, especially in artificial intelligence. We will continue our efforts to propel our companies onto these markets and onto those of the other countries that have signed the CPTPP,” concluded Mr. Leblanc.
