Change to festival calendar will maximize use of Place des festivals

Montréal, August 10, 2009 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is pleased with Montréal's new event schedule that will bolster the FrancoFolies by moving it to June 9, making it the event that kicks off the City's 2010 festival season.

“The local business community has been capitalizing on Montréal's festival season for a long time. The creation of the Quartier des spectacles and, more recently, the opening of Place des festivals will pave the way to an extremely rich program as well as to efficiency gains. Today's announcement is being viewed from this perspective,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

“Place des festivals, designed to accommodate large cultural events, will encourage promoters to build schedules that maximize use of the space by planning festivals back to back. It stands to reason that two events planned for the same venue by the same promoter should take place one after the other in order to take advantage of the same installations. It is now up to everyone to work together to enrich July's program, perhaps by rallying around the recently proposed Zoofest project,” added Michel Leblanc.

“This is the kind of collaboration and pooling of strengths we need to improve our summer event program and position Montréal as a major festival metropolis that will draw artists and tourists alike,” concluded the organization's CEO.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has some 7,000 members. Its primary mission is to represent the interests of the business community of Greater Montréal and to provide individuals, merchants, and local businesses of all sizes with a variety of specialized services to help them achieve their full potential in terms of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. The Board of Trade is Quebec's leading private economic development organization.
