The 2014-2015 provincial budget: Stimulating the city’s economy must be a priority

Montréal, February 18, 2014 – With the 2014-2015 Quebec budget about to be tabled by Quebec’s Minister of Finance and the Economy, Nicolas Marceau, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal would like to restate the importance of implementing concrete measures to support Greater Montréal’s recovery.

“The Government of Quebec has publicly stated on a number of occasions its intention to strengthen the city’s economy; it’s time to move from talk to action,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “The Greater Montréal area accounts for more than half of the province’s GDP, employment and population. Premier Marois and her government have publicly acknowledged that Montréal needs to resume its role as an economic driver of Quebec. The budget that will be tabled this week will be indicative of the government’s commitment to the city’s economy.”

“We need to improve the city’s business environment to support private investment, business creation, productivity improvements and economic growth,” Michel Leblanc said. “By making the city the priority and harnessing its economy and many assets, we can support wealth creation for all of Quebec and stabilize public finances.”

On January 10, the Board of Trade presented the Government of Quebec with its prebudget recommendations, which follow three orientations:

  1. Quickly stabilize public finances and take action to reach zero deficit within two years at the most.
  2. Improve the business environment in Greater Montréal.
  3. Support growth-generating projects and wealth creation.

He will be available to comment on the budget and answer questions from journalists who are on site. Mr. Leblanc will be available to other members of the press after the lock-up.
