Artificial Intelligence in Montréal – facts and figures:

  • Montréal has the largest concentration of artificial intelligence researchers in the world, with 150 researchers—about a hundred associated with the Université de Montréal and some fifty at McGill. This offers unique access to high-level knowledge in the field, which attracts large numbers of investments, both private and public.
  • The arrival of major global players comes with massive private investments. Google has in fact announced a $4.5 million grant for university research and the establishment of a specialized deep learning division. Microsoft Ventures announced an initial investment in Montréal incubator Element AI, created by Montrealers Jean-François Gagné, Nicolas Chapados, Yoshua Bengio, and Jean-Sébastien Cournoyer.
  • As for government investments, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund has granted a $93.6 million subsidy to The Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO).
  • With 20 years of experience in AI development for its video games, Ubisoft Montréal is today strengthening its collaborative ties with the university research milieu through its R&D department, La Forge. The goal: to explore the full inventive potential—namely with regard to AI—of this relationship that is beneficial to both game development and other spheres of society.
