The Board of Trade’s team of international trade experts, the World Trade Centre Montréal, is organizing a trade mission to Tokyo, Japan, from February 24 to 27, 2015, during World Smart Energy Week 2015. The world-renowned trade fair will be holding specialized exhibitions on energy production, processing, storage, and savings, in addition to presentations on intelligent grid systems.

WHY JAPAN?
Since the 1970s, Japan has been notable for its avant-gardism, its leadership, and its competitiveness in the area of green technology and clean energy, considerably outdistancing other members of the OECD in terms of its investment in research and development (3.4% of its GDP in 2013 according to the World Bank).
There are many business opportunities to be seized: transportation (hybrid vehicles, rechargeable hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles), “smart” electricity distribution networks, geothermal energy, insulation, climate control, heating systems, construction (engineering, eco-friendly materials, energy consumption), and public services, to name but a few.
As a leader in the eco-friendly vehicle market, in 2012, Japan alone represented 28% of the global battery electric vehicle (BEV) market and was the world’s second-largest market as far as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) go.
As such, the growing needs of this market of 128 million inhabitants are expected to quickly increase the number of Quebec companies (722 according to Industry Canada) actively exporting to Japan. Indeed, as resources are rare, Abe’s government has no other choice but to promote the implementation of programs that aim to stimulate imports and the effective use of clean energy.
In addition, in 2013, Japan was the world’s second-largest investor in renewable energy, reaching a threshold of 23 GW of installed renewable energy sources (including 9 GW of hydro power and 5.6 GW of solar power) by June of that same year.
Japan is a country with high purchasing power, where the price factor is not a priority. As such, quality and relevance are equally important, which, for example, allows Quebec companies to export promising albeit developing technology.
