Over $200 million in university research:
Leading-edge research strengthens the city’s business environment

Montréal, September 6, 2016 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes today’s announcement by the Minister of International Development and the Francophonie, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, of over $213 million allocated to three university research projects being conducted by Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and McGill University.

“Today’s announcement is great news for the city’s researchers,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “By focusing on innovative, growth-generating technologies, such as artificial intelligence and neuroscience, we are reinforcing Montréal’s position as a university city. The foundation of innovative businesses is research-driven advances. The announcement sends a strong signal about the need to leverage university research to support the development of our knowledge-based economy.”

“World-class universities strengthen the Greater Montréal business environment,” Michel Leblanc said. “They are essential to attracting and retaining talent and businesses. This announcement shows the federal government’s intention to take direct action for growth-generating sectors by funding research by the city’s four flagship universities through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. This will revitalize universities and drive our efforts in innovation.”

“We encourage both the federal and provincial governments to continue with initiatives to strengthen universities and make higher education a priority for the future,” Michel Leblanc said.
