Montréal, June 14, 2016 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the exhaustive work done by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which released a socioeconomic study on Montréal today entitled Montréal, métropole de talent. Secretary General Angel Gurria and Montréal Mayor and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal Denis Coderre were on hand for the study’s release. This is a credible study that presents suitable courses of action for the city.
“The Board of Trade is pleased that an independent international organization recognizes our city’s undeniable assets,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “The report points to the ample talent available and the quality of our research institutions. However, like others before it, the study shows that a great deal remains to be done for the city to fully play its role as the province’s economic driver.”
“The Board of Trade agrees that the solution to low business and labour productivity lies in more effectively using our talent and developing greater entrepreneurial drive,” Michel Leblanc said. “Businesses and schools need to work together more to improve the qualifications of workers, the professional integration of immigrants and the fit between training and jobs. The Board of Trade is already active on these issues and will continue in its efforts, in part through the Interconnection program.”
“The report also points to the need to give the Ville de Montréal more power and autonomy to reinforce its role as economic driver,” Mr. Leblanc said. “The Board of Trade reiterates its support for the Ville de Montréal in its efforts to obtain metropolitan status with the Government of Quebec.”
“The Board of Trade supports the study’s proposal and is ready to contribute to developing a global, integrated strategy that will rally key players to work together to improve the city’s economic performance,” Michel Leblanc said. “We encourage our members and partners to do likewise. Collaboration will allow the city to achieve its full potential.”
