Amazon comes to Montréal: Further proof of the city’s strength in the IT sector

Montréal, January 14, 2016 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is delighted that Amazon intends to open a data centre in Montréal in 2016. This will be Amazon Web Services’ first move beyond U.S. borders within North America, evidence of the city’s strength in the information technology sector and its ability to attract the largest international companies.

“We are pleased that a company of this magnitude and prominence has chosen Montréal to invest in and establish its first centre in Canada,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade. “This giant in cloud computing infrastructure will further reinforce the city’s already robust IT sector.”

“This is yet more proof of the significance of Montréal’s IT sector on the international scene,” Michel Leblanc added. “Hydroelectricity is an asset for the Montréal area’s influence and the quality of its business environment. Amazon Web Services’ intention to open a centre here in an effort to be carbon neutral and use clean, renewable energy demonstrates our energy system’s advantages for sectors with high energy use.”

“This player’s arrival on the Montréal scene will have a very positive impact on innovation and competition among innovative and creative projects,” Michel Leblanc said.
